Hi Shanna, Quotes that came to mind reading your post...Getting old is the shits. Its the shits getting old! (My great aunt Theresa. May she RIP!) And, better to be alone than in bad company.

Getting old is a shit show in any case unless you are Jack LaLanne or Susan Lucci! (And Jack even looked like death the closer he got to it.

That is one reason that I am ok with not going back to the states to visit. The 2 family members I have were in their early 80s when I saw them 3+ years ago and it is painful to see them look so old. Frankly, at my age I am looking forward to the alternative! I am sure that it will beat the pain and suffering of growing old!

In the end your will be hard pressed to find better company than your dog. ;)

Hi Shanna, so glad you had a catch up with Andrew! I take it, he's gone back home now? I know what you mean about close friends. We went to live in Spain in 2003 and lost touch with so many people over here but then made new ones! But then when the economic crisis hit Spain towards the end of that decade, work dried up, my mother in law passed away so we came back to England in 2012 (god it's 10 years next February!) So we lost touch with friends in Spain, moved to a town we hadn't lived in before so didn't really know anyone! Apart from my sister who is my best, best friend, all my friends now are on Twitter or Instagram etc so I don't get to see them much, in fact I've only met a few of them mainly at the NEC Camping & Motorhome show where I met Andrew and several others that I converse with on Twitter! They all live in different parts of the country! But what I'm driving at is, they are all the best friends I have ever had because we're not in each other's pockets! They are all so friendly & welcoming, will do anything for you, don't judge me and I hope this will continue till I drop off this mortal coil!! I have been invited by one of them to go and stay with them, in Scotland as it happens! That's not till next July though but I shall look forward to meeting them at last! Anyway, I'm sure you'll eventually find that really close friend who doesn't live miles & miles away and you won't grow old alone! Take care till next time xx

Ditto. I’m solo. With a mall dog. Living alone in Maine. My best friened was as you describe yours, but sadly died a few years back. My other best friend is still nearby, but we’ve drifted apart enough so that we’re no longer daily or ev/en weekly pals. There are two more, a couple, who are my closest friends, talking daily, seeing each other weekly. But that first one, we were close. Talk for hours and hours.. Walk for miles. Miss that, and pretty sure it wont happen again. I don’t have 20 years. Maybe 10. Still, life is good. But oh, do I miss the walks, the dreams of places we’d see. We used to think we’d share a house “when we got old”—then we did.
