Hey there Shanna

We had the large house in Australia. We needed the two bathrooms with teens but the rest just meant hours of mopping for me. We knew we couldn't survive in 30 to 40 sqm but we had lived in an 80 sqm house with young children and that suited us.

We have had a dishwasher since having young children, so we are use to using them and love not doing dishes so there's nothing new there.

I think we thought we would work less and party more, but even before the pandemic we did a little but we still seem to load some kind of work on our shoulders. Hard to change bad habits that's for sure.

The best thing is having a workshop. It now doesn't seem big enough and we may need to buy another space off site. To be able to go upstairs and work on the creative process with materials at arms reach is magical.

We had a shed for working in all our married life. They get hot and aren't very inviting. I would find myself claiming a part of the house or the kitchen table and then having to clean up very quickly before finishing or resolving what I had started.

The other major change is the beach. I have never really liked our beautiful beaches in Australia and now realise it was never the beach that was the problem. The sun, no ozone and people were the problem. Here the sun isn't as harsh and I don't have to worry about burning to a crisp. Plus, the people at least this side of the river don't judge you by your weight or colour.

Personally, more stuff I have and more anxious and more stress i become. In the states, I had a big house, granted I have 4 kids, now in their late 20’S, but nevertheless while I liked the space and needed it at the time, it never really felt cosy.

Since I moved to Portugal, I have a two bedroom apartment. My husband still works twice a week therefore he took the second bedroom for his office which is also an occasional guest room if someone pass by.

But for me, I use the living room for any studying or leisure and the bedroom. I am much happier with just enough furniture and bare painted wall with calm, soft, and warm colors. The only thing we added were counters in the kitchen and kitchen cupboards because I do not like grocery shopping. We tend to stock things in promotions and then just go once a week for fresh food. I decided to let go of the dishwasher and I am fine with that. It is faster for me to do the dishes than load the dishwasher and unload it which I hate to do. I do the dishes for lunch, my husband at night.

I let go of cooking too, just simple stuff now. After all, I am retired and I like to feel on vacation. I am into no constraints for me. Actually my doggy keeps me on a loose schedule. The best part of having a smaller place is the cleaning. What a relief! I can spend more time doing what I like now. I see the American way of having a big house, a garden, and working a lot to maintain financially the buying power to maintain a higher consumption of goods as a life full of chores. Weekends spent shopping, mowing or cleaning is not the kind of life I want and that I am certain.

Hi Shanna! I only live in a small house but I could really do with a good old clear out!! My kitchen is a fair size and I have realised over the years that I only actually use a very small amount of space in the cupboards I have. I have a mountain of stuff that I don't even use!! It's ridiculous! They are all full but I hardly use any of it! It's the same with my bedroom storage, there are clothes in there I had completely forgotten about!! Being in this lockdown I, like many others have fallen into the trap of online purchasing!! Some weeks, there's stuff coming everyday! I have to curb my spending bigtime! So although the space I do have is good enough for my needs, I still hoard a lot of rubbish, I have to start spring cleaning with avengeance! Stay safe Shanna, take care xxx

So good friend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was thinking about buying a new desk, but decided against it. My current set-up is fine. I’d rather use the money for a training program or class … in what, I have no idea. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤪 Better to invest in experiences, instead of stuff I don’t need.
