Hi Shanna! Love the photo for this edition - I stayed in an airbnb across from that little store last year! 😀

The “fantasy self” had us laughing out loud & it’s so true! The things we dream about and feel we want in our new location may not be the things we really need to live near or will even practically utilize. It’s food for thought, for sure, as we narrow down where to live. Thanks for bringing that up!

I don’t think there’s anything in my comment that suggests only the people in Leiria district are real or genuine. Read again. Yes, I have read other things you’ve written and watched one of your Setúbal videos. You are adept at what you do, and I have no doubt you are doing the best you can. Boa sorte.

A couple of things. First, the terms and comparisons in this latest edition are very US oriented. Who else would know about La Jolla, for example. Second, the captions, e.g “variety store” might be replaced with what the Portuguese say, so readers learn something new. Third, you breeze right over the majority of the landmass of the country, as though everyone wants to live in the expensive, ex-pat dense and often barely Portuguese areas. Many folks come here specifically to get away from the same old same old. We want to experience and assimilate into places along the road less traveled by. And maybe try that other dream, eco living, self-sufficency, going off-grid.

I chose the interior of Leiria. It doesn’t have a Starbucks on every corner, or an Ikea down the street. There are real people speaking Portuguese. It’s not always convenient or easy. But it’s genuine, and I will never trade it for a tourist ghetto or a big city. Why come to Portugal if you really just want to drag your past life into a patch of sun?

I have a question Shanna. I’m going to talk with an accountant in Coimbra on Monday regarding how an American will be taxed on my income from IRA distributions, SS income, and rental income of a house in the US. And if I want to do any consulting work living in PT with people in US.

Since I want to retire it makes since to understand this fully. I understand the US taxes income in PT although EU countries don’t double tax. 😩

I still would like to purchase property in PT. Am I only allowed to stay as a tourist 3 months a year? But if I get a D 7 as long as I want. I’m not sure yet what makes since for me yet.
