You’re reading life: examined, a compendium of ideas, thoughts, and questions about living a creative, intentional life—from my home in Portugal to you.

It's been three months.
I've spent three months sporadically working on a personal essay for you.
It's been three months since I last published on Substack (the host of this newsletter if ya didn't know).
Well, where is this thing? I hear you exclaim.
I don't know.
I mean, I know where it is. It's sitting in my Writings in Progress folder stored in the cloud AND on my laptop's desktop, just in case.
Lest you think this overdue essay is a big deal, it’s not. The just-in-case save-it-in-two-places measure is a habit. I'd be sad if the essay went missing, but it’d be okay. And although it won't win any prizes, I still want to finish it and send it to you.
Reasons/Excuses
I haven’t completed this measly post for several reasons.
The most recent would be two deaths last week: one of a family member and the other was the spouse of my spouse's best friend. That will be enough of that for a while, please, and thank you.
While the reasons for my procrastination are many, the most noteworthy one is the essay's subject: my capricious health and how it shapes my daily life.
This topic is one I believe some of you can relate to, so I want to do it justice.
Sounds like a hoot, doesn't it?
Putting this out there in a public way will help me get this thing done. It might be the next essay, but for now, I'm sharing this brief thing to let you know that I wanted to send you something else.
I hope you'll stick around in the life: examined community. Each one of you, new and old timers, matters to me and this little publication.
